Do I need a website for my business if I have Instagram and Google Maps - Team Elivate blog

Do I Need a Website for My Business If I Have Instagram?

Short answer: For most local businesses, yes, you need a website for your business even if you already have Instagram and a Google Business Profile. Those two are free and worth having, but the platform makes the rules, not you. A website is the one place you fully control. It also gives your Google profile somewhere to send people. If money is tight right now, start with the free Google profile and add a simple website soon after.

“Do I need a website for my business if I already get orders on Instagram?” If you run a shop in Rohini or Pitampura, you’ve probably asked yourself this. People find you on Google Maps. Customers message you on Instagram. Why spend money on a website?

It’s a fair question. Here’s an honest answer, including when you can skip a website for now.

Why isn’t Instagram enough on its own?

Instagram is great for showing your work and talking to customers. The problem is simple: the account lives on Meta’s platform, under Meta’s rules.

  • Accounts can be disabled. Instagram says it disables accounts that break its rules, and you have to appeal through its Help Center to get one back. Until then, your page and followers are out of reach.
  • Your links are limited. Instagram lets you add up to five links in your bio. Posts and captions are mostly pictures and short text, not full pages.
  • Old posts get buried. Your price list or delivery area from three months ago is hard to find. On a website, it sits on one page that’s always there.

Keep using Instagram. Just don’t make it the only home your business has online.

Isn’t a Google Business Profile enough?

A Google Business Profile is the most useful free tool a local business has. If you don’t have one yet, set it up first. Our guide on getting your business on Google Maps walks you through it.

But the profile works best with a website next to it. Google’s own help page says you can share your business’s website on your Business Profile. It’s an easy way for people to see your full services, prices and photos before they call.

Google also says prominence, one of the things that decides how you rank locally, is “based on info like how many websites link to your business and how many reviews you have.” A website gives other sites, directories and partners a proper page to link to.

One more lesson. Google used to let businesses make a free basic website from their Business Profile. In March 2024, Google turned those sites off. After a short redirect, visitors saw a “page not found” error. Free tools are handy, but they can change or disappear.

Do I need a website for my business right away?

Honestly, not every business needs one on day one. You can wait a bit if:

  • You’ve just started and most customers come by word of mouth.
  • You work from home and only serve a few nearby streets.
  • You don’t have the budget yet. Spend your time on a complete Google profile and getting reviews first. Here’s how to get more Google reviews.

Once people start searching for what you sell, or you plan to run ads, it’s time to build one.

What should a small business website have?

You don’t need 20 pages. For a local shop, clinic or service business, this is plenty:

  1. A clear line at the top saying what you do and where. “AC repair in Rohini” beats “Welcome to our website”.
  2. Call and WhatsApp buttons that work with one tap on a phone.
  3. Your services, with prices or “starting from” prices if you can share them.
  4. Real photos of your work, shop or team. Not stock photos.
  5. Your address, a map, and opening hours that match your Google profile.
  6. A link to your Google reviews.

Make sure it loads fast. Many of your visitors will open it on a phone.

How much does a business website cost?

Frequently asked questions

Can Instagram replace a website for my business?

Not fully. Instagram is good for showing your work and getting messages, but the account runs on Meta’s rules and can be disabled. A website is the one place online that you control.

Do I need a website if my business is on Google Maps?

It’s not required, but it helps. Google lets you add your website to your Business Profile, and Google says local prominence is based partly on how many websites link to your business.

Will a website bring me customers on its own?

No. A website works when people can find it. Link it from your Google profile and Instagram, collect reviews, and keep your details up to date.

Is a one-page website enough for a small shop?

Often, yes. One clear page with your services, prices, photos, address, map, and call and WhatsApp buttons covers what most local customers want to know.

What happened to Google’s free Business Profile websites?

Google turned them off in March 2024. Visitors were sent to the Business Profile for a short time, and after June 10, 2024 they saw a “page not found” error instead.
